How to Plan a Road Trip to Rival Route 66

Taking a road trip is the perfect way to see the country (or even the world) and create lasting memories with your friends or family, but before you hit the open road, there are a few things you need to do to plan the perfect trip. From figuring out your route to packing the right items, a little bit of planning can go a long way in making sure your road trip is enjoyable for everyone involved.

Here are the key things you need to do:

  • Choose a Vehicle

Choosing the right vehicle is imperative as it will determine how comfortable the journey will be and how much luggage you can bring. It is also worthwhile to factor in fuel efficiency and cost, as well as safety features. For longer road trips, an RV (recreational vehicle) can be an excellent option. It provides more space and amenities than a car, allowing you to bring more supplies, and also saving the need to book accommodation. Some RVs are also equipped with RV wifi, allowing you to stay connected during your travels.

  • Get your vehicle insured

One of the most important things to remember when planning a road trip is to make sure you have the right insurance for your vehicle. Depending on where you’re going and what you’ll be doing, you may need to get additional coverage. For example, if you’re renting a car or driving through unfamiliar territory, it’s a good idea to get collision and comprehensive coverage. This will protect you in case of an accident or other damages to your vehicle, so consider onesure insurance (or other similar insurance) before heading off.

  • Choose your destination

Once your insurance is sorted, you can decide on a destination. This will help you determine how long your trip will be, what route you’ll take, and what type of accommodation you’ll need. If you’re not sure where you want to go, try brainstorming with friends or family, looking online for inspiration, or consulting a travel agent. There are plenty of destinations to choose from, but consider going somewhere that will be worth the long drive!

  • Decide on your route

Once you’ve chosen your destination, it’s time to start planning your route. You’ll need to take into account things like distance, weather, and traffic, but you can use an online mapping tool like Google Maps to help plan and make sure the route is feasible. You should also consider making stops along the way to break up the drive and see some sights, so choose a route with plenty of services along the way.

  • Write a packing list

Now that you know where you’re going and how you’re getting there, it’s time to start packing. Make a list of everything you’ll need for the trip, including clothes, toiletries, medicines, and snacks and drinks. Don’t forget a phone charger, too. If you’re travelling with others, be sure to coordinate so that everyone has what they need without doubling up and wasting space.

  • Plan your budget

Budgeting is an important part of any trip, but it’s especially important for a road trip since you’ll be spending money on things like fuel and food. Be sure to factor in the cost of your accommodation and keep in mind that the price of fuel may change as you travel. If you’re on a tight budget, consider some money-saving options like camping instead of staying in hotels, cooking your own meals, and packing your snacks and drinks ahead of time instead of buying them at expensive services.

  • Book your accommodation

If you’re not camping or sleeping in your car, you’ll need to book accommodation for your road trip. This can be anything from a hotel room to a caravan rental. Be sure to book early to get the best rates, but remember that many of these places are likely to be in the middle of nowhere, so you shouldn’t expect 5 stars.

Summary

A road trip is a great way to explore the world and spend time with friends or family. Whilst there’s a lot to think about, if you take the time to plan ahead, you’re sure to have a great time on your road trip. Happy travels!
